Biography

Called to the Bar in 1972, Alfred has close to four decades worth of experience in the field of family law and family law litigation, mediation, and arbitration. A long-time lecturer and author, Alfred is well-respected in his field, evidenced by his recent receipt of the Ontario Bar Association Annual Award for Excellence in Family Law.

A fellow of both the American College of Trial Lawyers and the International Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, Alfred served as an instructor, senior instructor, and associate head of the family law section of the Bar admissions course. Certified by the Law Society of Upper Canada as a specialist in family law in 1991, he was designated as a leading practictioner of family law by the Canadian Legal Lexpert Directory and is featured in the Best Lawyers in Canada directory.

Alfred is a well-published expert, with his work appearing in such highly regarded family law publications as Family Law Quarterly and Child Custody Law and Practice. He is also author of Carswell's Annual Review of Family Law and the editor of Matrimonial Property Law in Canada. He is frequently called upon as a speaker or lecturer at various family law conferences, including those administered by the Law Society of Upper Canada, the Canadian Bar Association, the National Judicial Institute, the Ontario Conference of Judges, the Federation of Law Societies, the Association of Family and Conciliation Courts, and the Ontario Advocates Society. 

Alfred is a senior member of the Children's Lawyer Panel, dealing with the representation of children in custody, access disputes, and child welfare matters. In addition he is a member of the Province of Ontario's family law rules committee and the Law Society of Upper Canada's specialist certification board.

With a lifelong interest in the arts, Alfred enjoys writing poetry and painting.  He is a fan of Leonard Cohen's music and also appreciates newer artists like Il Divo.  Never one to hide from the limelight, Alfred sported long locks and drove an orange Corvette earlier in his career.
