Biography
“No matter the issues at hand, my goal in every family law matter is to minimize conflict and move toward resolution in a timely, practical, and cost-effective way. I take a thoughtful, empathetic approach that helps clients navigate complex parenting and financial situations with clarity and confidence.”
Kayla Gordon is a senior associate in McKenzie Lake Lawyers’ Family Law Practice Group. Practicing both virtually and from the firm’s Guelph office, Kayla represents clients across Ontario in all areas of family law, with a particular focus on negotiating comprehensive separation agreements, marriage contracts, and cohabitation agreements. Her practice is resolution-driven, emphasizing negotiation, collaboration, and practical solutions that protect her clients’ interests while minimizing unnecessary conflict and cost. When litigation becomes necessary, she draws on her extensive courtroom experience to advocate effectively and strategically, ensuring her clients are supported from the first discussion to the final resolution.
Before her legal career, Kayla worked at Western and McMaster Universities as a researcher in the areas of law, family-focused public health, and the prevention of intimate partner violence—experience that deepens her understanding of the human and systemic factors involved in family breakdown. This background informs the compassion and empathy she brings to her practice, enabling her to support clients through some of the most challenging periods of their lives with professionalism and care.
Since her call to the bar in 2019, Kayla has practiced exclusively in family law. She has built her entire legal career in Guelph, where she summered, articled, and practiced at another full-service firm before joining McKenzie Lake. Kayla’s practice is grounded in collaboration and mutual respect—values reflected in the strong working relationships she maintains with the local bench and bar, as well as with trusted professionals such as mediators, parenting coordinators, and business valuators. A long-standing and active community leader, Kayla currently serves on the Board of Directors and HR Committee for United Way Guelph-Wellington-Dufferin, and as Past Chair of United Way’s GenNext Committee, which organizes networking-focused fundraising events for local young professionals. Her deep involvement in the community further strengthens the professional relationships and local ties that benefit her clients and her practice. Kayla’s clients appreciate her ability to bring together the right experts, advance their interests efficiently and constructively, and remain fully prepared to litigate when resolution cannot be achieved.
On a personal note, Kayla enjoys traveling, crafting, and singing, and treasures time spent with friends, family, and her beloved fur baby, Bernie the Bernedoodle. Those who know and work with her appreciate her genuine, empathetic, and uplifting nature. She approaches even the most difficult situations with kindness, perspective, and a touch of humour, helping clients feel supported and at ease throughout their matter.
