Called to the Bar in 1974, Richard is proudly affiliated with a number of organizations, in Canada and abroad. A member of the Canadian Bar Association, he is also affiliated with organizations such as the Court of Arbitration for Sports for which he has been an arbitrator at five Olympic Games, the Beijing Arbitration Commission, the London Court of International Arbitration, and the Dubai International Arbitration Centre, among several others.
Richard specializes in commercial and international commercial disputes; labour and employment law; bankruptcy and insolvency; banking and secured financing; arbitration, mediation and dispute resolution; and sports law. Richard's expertise is well respected throughout the world, and he holds such prestigious positions as a seat on the Strauss Institute, Council of Distinguished Advisors (Pepperdine University), the Court of Arbitration of Sport, Vice Chair of the Sports Law Institute at Marquette University and the American Express Cardholder Dispute Resolution Roster. Richard is a senior law professor at The University of Western Ontario and specializes in commercial and dispute resolution and general business law.
Richard's passion for business and law has meant travel between London, Ontario and London, England and many other places in the world. He obtained an HBA from The University of Western Ontario's Ivey School of Business, as well as graduating cum laude with an LLB from
Western's Faculty of Law. Richard also received his LLM degree from the London School of Economics and Political Science from the University of London in the United Kingdom. He was also the recipient of a Mackenzie King scholarship, designated to support graduate studies outside of Canada.
Beyond his legal practice, Richard volunteers at his church and is a member of a fundraising committee for the Royal Canadian Regiment Museum. He continues to support the educational world by serving as a member of the Corporation of Huron University College, director of the Western Business Law Clinic, and as chairman emeritus of the Board of Governors Trinity College School. He has been honoured by The University of Western Ontario with the Richard H. McLaren Professorship in Business Law.
