Biography

Mort received a Bachelor of Arts degree from The University of Western Ontario in 1972, followed by a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Windsor in 1975. He was subsequently called to the Bar in 1977. He is a member of the Law Society of Upper Canada, the Canadian Bar Association, the Ontario Bar Association, and the Middlesex Law Association.

Fairness and credibility permeates all of Mort's work, having served as an election observer for parliamentary and presidential elections in the former Soviet Union in 2000, 2004, and 2007 and has passed a series of certification programmes by the United Nations' Institute for Training and Research.  In what may be the most contentious and divisive field of all, he has been a carded softball umpire.

His primary practice areas deal with real estate, land development, commercial financing, condominium development and corporate advocacy and estate administration including wills, powers of attorney and trusts. Mort is highly regarded within the community, receiving an appointment as a Federal Queen's Counsel by the Minister of Justice, "in recognition of his dedication to the law and its advancement in our society." Over a period of six years, Mort served as either the chair or vice-chair of the City of London Committee of Adjustment. He has also served as a member of the Federal Business Development Bank, Ontario-Region Advisory Council.

Mort has remained engaged in social aspects of the community, serving as director or voluntary legal counsel with the Ontario Division of the Canadian Diabetes Association, and the London-Middlesex Branch of the Canadian Mental Health Association. He enjoys world travel, with a particular interest in the African continent. This has served Mort in good stead, positioning him as a lecturer in logistics to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and as advance co-ordinator for the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting in Zimbabwe and the Toronto G7 economic summit.
