After obtaining his Bachelor of Arts in Economics from The University of Western Ontario in 1996, Daniel received his LLB from the University of Victoria three years later. He was then called to the Bar in 2001 and has since specialized in franchise and intellectual property law.
Daniel is a member of professional associations on both sides of the 49th parallel. He is a member of the Law Society of Upper Canada, the Canadian Bar Association, the Canadian Franchise Association, the Ontario Bar Association, the Middlesex Law Association, the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada, as well as the American Bar Association. He is a respected voice in the field of franchising, sitting as an executive member of the Ontario Bar Association joint subcommittee on franchising, and is a legal column editor for the Canadian Franchise Association's publication Franchise Voice.
His expertise on franchise matters is highly regarded and Daniel is a consultant on Fortune Hunters and Dragon's Den -- both CBC television broadcasts -- and he serves as the official legal counsel for North America's largest franchise show series. As a published author and columnist (including several books, papers, and articles relating to franchise law), Daniel's opinion has been sought by both the industry and the media. Various provinces have solicited his advice in regards to their adoption of franchise legislation, and he is frequently sought by the media to lend legal perspective and quotes on various articles. He is also the author of the best-selling franchise law textbook, Canadian Franchise Law Handbook.
Daniel is a regular on the speaking circuit, co-chairing the 2009 Canadian Franchise Association Legal Symposium, and has lectured for numerous organizations. He has plenty of practice speaking before crowds, serving as an adjunct professor in the Faculty of Law at the University of Western Ontario.
His talents extend well beyond the confines of the legal arena: he is an internationally recognized concert pianist who has performed around the world, including such exalted locations as the National Arts Centre in Ottawa, Toronto's Convocation Hall, and at Oberlin, Ohio's prestigious Warner Concert Hall. In addition to tickling the ivories, he is also adept at navigating the waves, having competed in a sailboat race that ran from British Columbia to Hawaii.
While his dedication to work is evident, Daniel is also fond of fun and games, best shown by the fact that he once owned the seventh-largest collection of vintage video game consoles in North America. Although that collection has passed into other hands after a self-professed "heartbreaking sale", Daniel continues to maintain an active lifestyle, participating in offshore sailing, mountain biking, rowing and keeping up with his lovely, but tenacious young daughter.
